Over 15 years helping people navigate the divorce process emotionally, financially and socially. Former leader of the Rocklnad/Bergen Divorce Support Community covering Ny and NJ counties.
I have been working with people from all walks of life who struggle to come to terms with their marriage that has ended. I have had clients who were married several months to over 30 years. I was trained by the Diocese of Newark in their eight-week Divorce program which deals with the emotional aspects of divorce covering such topics as Loneliness, Anger, Blame and more. I then used that information to lead a Meetup group for divorce support.
In the meetup group, I had weekly roundtable discussions for members, monthly meetings featuring guest speakers on topics such as Managing Finances, Choosing an Attorney, Forgiveness, Trust and more. Along with the emotional and practical aspects of divorce, we realized that we needed to add social activities where members could enjoy themselves without the pressure of a dating group. Many of our members either had no support in our area or they had lost family friends in the divorce and needed to learn how to be social again after many years of living with one person. We had weekend camping trips, nights in NYC for dinner and a play, movie nights, soup nights, skeet shooting, attendance at charity events and many more fun activities. We also made it a point to schedule some activity on the popular holidays like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day, Christmas, etc that were family oriented. Our goal was that no one should spend a holiday alone.
I am happy to report that the group still thrives although I had to step down because I moved to Florida. I always had co-leaders to help with the work of managing about 100 active members. I did not want to give the impression that the group was more a men's or women's group. And I needed partners that I could bounce ideas off of and discuss how to handle difficult situations.
I look forward to using my experience and skills in Florida now that I have settled.
